Hands-on Language production centers

Number of Students:
150
Program Objectives:

ALl K and First grade students will utilize the various learning centers, books, sight word materials and vocabulary stations to increase their use and knowledge of academic content in English. Utilizing our shcoolwide language-buddy program all students will experience a higher connection to and use of academic English in the classroom. These centers will be a critical piece of our English Language portion of our day, every day.

Methods of Implementation:
  1. These materials are designed for use in conjunction with the various units taught in K and 1st grade. Once children are taught the main vocabulary and sentence structures or frames, they will independently practice grouping, sorting, repeating, chanting, singing, and making sentences with these vocabulary pictures, books, bingo, sight words and magnets. Each K and 1st grade teacher will be able to use all of the materials throughout the year to enhance their student's use of English and practice with the various skills and concepts.
  2. All materials have been chosen for their ability to be used at varying levels, their durability, and their value in increasing EL's (English Learner's) output of English.

Grant Description:

These hands-on, colorful and vocabulary-rich learning centers for K/1 will provide our English Learners with materials to guide their practice of English grammar and vocabulary during the English instruction portion of our day.

How does this grant tie into your PLC:

This year our PLC focus at KBE is our English Language portion of the day, and specifically our English Learner programs. These materials are specifically what our K and 1st grade PLC's have determined to be our top priority for this school year. Without excellent English language materials it has been difficult to provide the quality of English instruction that we need. One of the reasons for our lack of materials has been the Lakeside re-configuration. The English teachers that were re-located to Tahoe Lake took their large bank of English materials with them.
