Several years ago, a grant was made to GES to create our Movemeent Centers. We have many organized activities, stored in our Movement Center Storage Closet on shelves in bins or other containers that are checked out and/or borrowed by staff to use for whole class and small groups. The different activites cover six different types of movement: Proprioception/Vestibular, Trunk Stabilization/Posture, Midline, Balance, Eye-Hand Coordination, and Fine Motor. The students benefit from the weekly experiences they have by gaining control over their bodies, working in teams, and developing the muscles in their hands and "power fingers" which transfers to improved pencil grasp. Movement Center Fridays are a highlight with our two classes. Many classes, especially the primary grades, use Movement Center materials on a regular basis. Our grant this time is to refurbish existing materials. The majority of the materials are still intact and capable of full use. However, some of our centers have parts and pieces that, over the years, have been lost, damaged, or consumed.
Because it is difficult for students to receive the recommended weekly minutes of PE, Movement Centers offer another convenient opportunity to encrease students' physical education time.
